Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service which obtains materials that are not owned by the Health Sciences Library. Books, dissertations, media, and photocopies of periodical and newspaper articles may be requested.
Who is eligible for ILL?
Medical staff, residents, hospital colleagues, students, HSHS corporate staff and Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis may use this service. Interlibrary loans relating to hospital business will be provided free of charge. Students must pay for any interlibrary loan fees charges by lending libraries.
How do I request a Loan?
Users should first check the Library Catalog or our Full Text Finder list to verify that the item is not owned by our library. To request a loan, users can complete the online Interlibrary Loan Request form.
How long will it take?
The time required for material to arrive depends upon the supplier and availability of the item. Articles usually arrive within a few days and books within two weeks. Library staff will attempt to obtain all requested materials by the user's date needed. Rush/Urgent requests are accepted for emergency patient care.
How will I be notified when my request has arrived?
Users will be notified by email or phone when items are ready to be pickup up. Copies of articles normally will be sent to users via email unless otherwise instructed. No further distribution of articles is permissible under U.S. Copyright laws.
How long may I keep the loan?
The loan period is determined by the lending library. To renew materials, contact the library by phone or email several days before the due date. Print items borrowed from other libraries must be returned via a traceable mechanism.
The Library provides Pubmed Loansome Doc interlibrary loan service to selected physicians who are not served by an adequate medical library. Please contact the Interlibrary Loan Department to obtain registration information.
